Can culture journalism survive on freelance rates?

What people said

I feel Hip Hop journalism has turned into a tabloid and gossip show, that disrespects the culture. I miss sitting and soundtracking with albums for weeks. Not days before being bombarded with the next drop. I started my magazine @hypeofflife to combat the negativity in media and give artists a positive platform built on Hip Hop’s core foundations. It’s hitting on 10 years now, and I agree with what you said - people’s actions don’t match their words because the support has not been the same if I were out here posting nonsense and other detrimental content. It’s frustrating at times. But I do feel there’s a change coming, as others have caught on and are tired of the garbage too

Also, newsrooms will say it's cheaper to hire a freelancer whom they don't have to pay a salary and provide health insurance to.

@evanfmoore_

people aren't paying artists for their amazing albums, they definitely aren't paying me to tell them about other amazing albums lool
